The Cherokee Nation today had a strong message to Senator Warren today: Useless.
The Cherokee Nation responded to the results of a DNA test released today by Senator Warren. They said the “DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship.” This statement came after it was revealed the Democratic senator “may have had” Native-American ancestry “in the range of 6-10 generations ago.” Which by all standards is considered useless.
“Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person’s ancestors were indigenous to North or South America,” Chuck Hoskin Jr. said today in a press release. Chuck Hoskin Jr. is the Cherokee Nation Secretary of State.
“Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation,” Hoskin continued. “Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage.”
This was a rare and strongly worded message from the Cherokee Nation to Senator Warren.
Warren took the step of sharing her DNA results in a desperate attempt to claim some kid of native American heritage, which she has claimed for decades – all the way back to when she was in college.
According the DNA test, Warren’s heritage might be “1/1024 Native-American ancestry”. Which is, as the Cherokee Nation pointed out, useless for anything.
Seanator Warren, who might be considering a run at the White House in 2020, would be easily defeated by President Trump. Trump calls Warren “Pocahontas” on a regular basis, poking fun at her imagined heritage.
