During a booming economy General Motors announced yesterday that it was cutting fifteen percent of it’s workforce in North America while stopping production at multiple plants. Today President Donald Trump tweeted about their recent announcement.
“Very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO, Mary Barra, for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland,” he Tweeted. “Nothing being closed in Mexico & China. The U.S. saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get!”
President Trump brings up a great point in that during the Obama administration they were bailed out and handed billions in cash. This is slap in the face to the U.S. Government who helped to bail them out. In return, they are now closing plants and killing off jobs. General Motors plans on closing plants in Ontario, Ohio, and Michigan, and could cost us fourteen thousand U.S. jobs. General Motors will also stop producing the Chevrolet Cruze and the Buick LaCrosse.
Barra also falsely claimed that the tariffs were hurting their business, even though Ford, Dodge, Chrysler, and other auto makers are not having any issues.
In direct retaliation against General Motors Trump warned he might be interested in cutting subsidies for General Motors. The U.S. government hands out tax credits for owners of electric cars.
“General Motors made a big China bet years ago when they built plants there (and in Mexico) – don’t think that bet is going to pay off,” President Trump said. “I am here to protect America’s Workers!”
