Once upon a time Democrats used to be for both border security and Democrats used to be all for a wall.
Chuck Schumer, for example, once said in 2009 “The American people need to know that, because of our efforts in Congress, our border is far more secure today than it was when we began debating comprehensive immigration reform in 2005. This progress includes … construction of 630 miles of border fence that create a significant barrier to illegal immigration on our southern land border.”
This is not an isolated moment. Schumer, Hillary, and Obama all voted in favor for the “Secure Fence Act” in 2006. The Secure Fence Act was to build over seven hundred miles of fencing on our southern border. While this is not a wall Trump has planned, it shows that Democrats clearly once cared about border security and protecting Americans.
Suddenly the Democratic party is dead set against Trump’s wall and protecting our border. It’s not like dirty Mexicans and South Americans have given up on the American dream. We know that caravans still continue to make it’s way north to the United States, bringing MS13 and terrorists alike to our border. We still need border protection, but suddenly all Democrats have little interest in protecting Americans as they sleep at night.
The only thing that has changed is Trump’s signature campaign promise. If Trump had never said anything about building a wall during his winning campaign, would Democrats still be dead set against it?
